concealed expressions emerge —
the mask of nature
Spirit resides beneath the mask.
In the world of Japanese Noh theatre, renowned for its simple almost sombre approach, there are no large sets or props, instead of make-up – a mask of neutral expression. It is thought that surface expression, through over-action or elaborate costume, distracts from the depth of experience.
Noh performers see their mask as a spiritual prop that enables them to focus on expressing inner feelings. When attuned to the slightest movement viewers are focused and attentive, able to connect with the story on a deeper level. Only then can the performance be fully understood and appreciated.
