Pre-event photo (click for larger view)

Description:

Behold a marvelously old katana in brilliant condition.
Swordsmith Katsuie comes from a lineage of master swordsmiths that dates back to Echizen Chiyozuru School. Their location in mountainous Kaga and Echizen provinces was strategically selected for it’s cool climate and pure water that was said to be superior to forge with.
Rarely do swords come better balanced. The splendid itame (wood grain) body gives the blade is strength and the wavy gunome hamon is such a feast for the eyes.
There is something to be said for a chiseled engraving of just two bold family characters. It reflects the ancient times (koto) of master sword making. Simple and to the point, this is a sword by Katsuie.
And as a general rule with Japanese Samurai swords, the fewer the characters chiseled on the tang, the OLDER the sword is. It’s certainly the case here.
The sword is certified Hozon (sword worthy of conserving) by the prestigious NBTHK. A custom-made koshirae made to your specifications would compliment this sword perfectly.
An enviable keepsake from Japan that one can be very proud to own.PK

This is one very beautiful and meaningful Samurai sword.
The Jumyo (寿命) school has its origins from Yamato (Nara prefecture) and moved to Mino province (Gifu prefecture) in the Kamakura period (1185-1333). The tradition continued for centuries, right up until the end of the Edo period in 1868.

A Japanese Samurai sword in prime condition will always pay dividends to the long-term investment value of the object.
This lovely signed katana has remained in near mint condition as it was crafted over 150 years ago. It is a sword made at the time of the last Samurai.
Born Tetsusaburo Kusano, Yoshimasa was trained by one of the greatest swordsmiths of the late Edo period, Sadayoshi Gassan. And his work testifies to this brilliance. He lived in Settsu province, which is modern day Osaka.
Blessed with a length of nearly 70cm with a gorgeous itame (wood grain) body, all of which contributed to its truly magnificent o-gunome (large wavy) temper line that is undeniably the focal point of this sword.
A custom koshirae (mounting) is a very worthy project for this katana.
The foundations are all there; signed by a respected swordsmith, in excellent condition, and the signature certified by the NBTHK as a sword worthy of conserving. PK

SOLD

Pre-event photo (click for larger view)

Description:

It is rare to find a katana at this length and with such impeccable engraving.
Celebrated swordsmith Sakai Ikkansai Shigemasa was born in 37th of Meiji (1904) and became a student of the great Shigetsugu Kasama in the 15th of Taisho (1926). Shigemasa first signed his name as 繁正, then later 繁政 (as seen on the tang of this splendid katana).
Shigemasa had a reputation for the most detailed of engravings such as the glorious dragon found protecting this sword. The sheer number of chisel strokes on the tang is also testament to the skill of this swordsmith.
Sakai Ikkansai Shigemasa was one of Kasama Shigetsugu’s formidable students and the heir to the Kasama Shigetsugu no Mon (School). Numerous swords signed by Shigetsugu are in fact “daimei”; made by Shigemasa and signed by Shigetsugu.
The Kasama Shigetsugu School was very active in pre-war and wartime Japan, and considered by contemporaries to exhibit the highest level of craftsmanship. According to the Tokyo Kindai Tosho, Shigemasa also worked with Yasuhiro at the Yasukuni forge. In 1936 he accompanied Yasuhiro when the latter moved to the Okura Tanrensho Dojo.

In 1942, Shigemasa was carefully chosen to craft ten highly prestigious presentation tanto swords commissioned by Admiral Yamamoto. Shigemasa was one of the most important swordsmiths in 20th century Japan.

Shigemasa eventually became a Mukansa swordsmith and teacher of the present day Mukansa swordsmith Ikkansai Shigehisa. After WW2, he was commissioned to make a sacred treasure ken for the Ise Shrine and was still winning sword-making prizes in his old age. Some of Shigemasa’s best swords have sold for $28,000.
This is an incredibly long sword at over 75cm and boats an elegant curvature with a beautiful tight itame (wood grain) hada body. The large gunome hamon is an absolute feast for the eyes.
This sword would be an ideal project to have a custom koshirae (mounting) made. Swords at this length are so very rare and if found engraved, much more expensive.
Brave, admirable and NBTHK certified. This is a most honorable sword at a very, very reasonable price. PK

This sword was sold at the Kamakura Sword Show III

Description:

The original Rai Minamoto Kunitsugu was one of the 10 famous students of the greatest swordsmith that ever lived, Masamune back in the 14th century.
It is he that provided this 17th century Edo-period swordsmith Daijo Minamoto Kunitsugu with the enormous inspiration to create this remarkable sword. The Yamashiro (Kyoto) and Soshu (Kamakura) traditions highly influenced this piece as represented by the exquisite results and chiseled engravings on the tang.
The rare and desirable hitatsura hamon (full temper with tobiyaki spots over the blade) is an example of heating the sword to extremely high temperatures, helping to make the sword very sharp and visually stunning.
The NBTHK designated this sword with Tokubestu Kicho vintage certification, meaning an especially precious katana. As a signed and certified piece, this sword is highly collectible and one that will hold excellent value in the long term.
A custom koshirae (mounting) will put the absolute finishing touch on this true gem.

Description:

Yoshisuke is one of the greatest swordsmiths from Sunshu Shimada school. The first generation of Yoshisuke was a student of Soshu Masahiro.
Yoshisuke studied under Imagawa Yoshitada and he received the symbolic Kanji “義” (Yoshi) from him, thereby making his name Yoshisuke (義助).
It has an elite quality that ranks it in company with such renowned swordsmiths such as the Kume school from Yamashiro and the legendary masters of Yukimitsu, Masamune and Tadamune in Soshu tradition.
This wakizashi is fully mounted with a refined detail that swords of such quality richly deserve. It is also blessed with a Samurai kozuka (paper knife) and kogai (hair pick) and decadent tsuba (guard) that all in their own right are very collectible pieces.

Description:

This exquisite 600-year-old wakizashi is from the renowned Houka school of swordsmiths. You’ll notice a bo-hi (groove) that extends nearly the full length of the blade.
The primary purpose of the groove was to lighten the blade, so as to give it better balance and control for the Samurai.
The hamon is refined suguha (straight) and the body is koitame hada (tight grain) andnagarehada (flowing grain). Only the finest smiths can produce such quality.
This sword was judged by the NBTHK and granted Hozon (a sword worthy of preserving issued by the Society for the Preservation of Japanese Art Swords).
Amongst the swords in our current collection exists a Houka katana from the same time period.
As an option, coupling this sword with the Houka katana would make an enviable daisho (the katana-wakizashi sword set that only the Samurai were permitted to wear in public during the Edo period.) PK

A MOUNTED MUROMACHI TANTO
A MOUNTED MUROMACHI TANTO
A MOUNTED MUROMACHI TANTO (HOZON)

Description:

For those who love the ocean, this sword holds very special significance.
Nami means “wave“, hira means “flat“. This translates to “sail on calm seas“. Naminohira swords made by Satsuma swordsmiths were very popular among the Japanese Imperial Navy for the swords brought with them a positive omen. In general Naminohira blades are very rare, making this is a unique find.
The jihada (body) of this blade is absolutely stunning, and properly reflects the skill of Naminohira smiths. It has a mokume (tight wood grain) appearance that remains in near-mint condition since it was forged over 500 years ago.
This tanto is also adorned with rare and exquisite mountings. The intricately designed tsuba (guard) that is made from namban tetsu (imported steel) brought to Japan from Spanish and Portuguese traders in the 16th century.
Beautiful shisa lions on the menuki protect and guard this sword by repelling evil spirits.
This sword was carefully examined by the Society for the Preservation of Japanese Swords and granted a well deserved NBTHK HOZON certificate – a sword worthy of conservation. This certification increases and helps preserve the value of the sword.
This is a piece that encompasses the spirit of the proud and diligent swordsmiths of the Naminohira tradition.

A DRAGON KATANA
A DRAGON KATANA

Description:

The scabbard on this sword features an expertly drawn articulated dragon wrapping itself the length of the saya.
Dragons are important legendary creatures in Japanese mythology. They empower the owner and bring with it tremendous fortune.
Interesting to note, one can tell the difference between a Japanese and Chinese dragon by looking at the number of claws they have. Japanese have three while Chinese dragons have four claws (considered an unlucky number in Japan).
This sword is respectfully long at nearly 70cm, and is an excellent representative of katanas produced during the Edo period (1600-1868). The hamon (temper line) is perfectly straight, which is very difficult to achieve from a crafting point of view. This clean temperline gives the piece balance as it does not detract from the artistically skilled scabbard.
All the mountings of this sword are of matching dragons from the Edo period. This sense of cohesive symmetry is widely admired in Japanese culture.
This sword in many ways encompasses the spirit and mystique of Japan and the enduring mark the Edo period had on the country.

A DOUBLE KOSHIRAE WAKIZASHI
A DOUBLE KOSHIRAE WAKIZASHI
A DOUBLE KOSHIRAE WAKIZASHI

Description:

This is a sword that is over 500 years-old and is lucky to have both a near-mint condition Japanese Navy Officer’s sharkskin scabbard from WWII plus a wonderful scabbard made in the late Edo period.
In the past, it was not uncommon for the Samurai to have several mountings for each of his swords. Depending on the occasion or simply his mood that day, he select his preferred mount.
The only issue with the sword is that it does have some traces of rust. You have the option to take the sword as it is and leave her in less than ideal condition, or you can have us help you restore this blade (which we’d prefer you’d do). The extra cost is just ¥60,000 and you have the opportunity to meet the expert sword polisher as well to add to the memory.
Once complete, this sword will give the owner a well-deserved sense of achievement. The sword will look almost brand new, and saved for future generations to admire.
A highly recommended project to remember Japan by.

A FUJIWARA TAKADA KATANA
A FUJIWARA TAKADA KATANA
A FUJIWARA TAKADA KATANA HOZON

Description:

Behold a sword with great character. It is attributed to Fujiwara Takada, a very respected swordsmith of his generation.
This is typical representation of Shinto era swords at the commencement of the Edo period (around 1630AD). Steel manufacturing and transport links became more efficient within the country, and the weight of this piece a testament to such cultural advancements.
On the mounting there is a unique reference to a royal family scene in which they are in battle with the Samurai. It is likely the depiction of the classic battles of the Taira and Minamoto clans in the Kyoto area in the late 12th century.
The menuki under the silk handle (tsuka) are of Shisa lions, which bring the owner good luck and can ward off evil spirits in the home. Look for the man and woman on the kashira (pommel) holding a giant naginata (pole sword). The red lacquered saya (scabbard) is decorated by the sprinkling of tiny pieces of sea shells.
It’s this impressive attention to detail that sets Japan apart from the rest of the world.
A marvelous keepsake from an iconic time in Japan.

A SEKI SHU DEWA NAOTSUGU WAKIZASHI

Description:

This blade shape is called “Shobu-zukuri”. Shobu Zukuri means “Iris Leaf”, which refers to the shape of the beautifully curved kissaki (tip of ther sword).
This type of sword has an exceptional cutting blade, as first demonstrated against the Mongol invaders of 1274 and, especially in 1281. This style of sword proved incredibly effective against Mongol armor. Many of the sword battles took place directly on the Mongol ships on the shores of Hakata Bay (Kyushu area).
There is a decidedly strong groove part way up the sword’ superb itame body. This provided a little better balance to the sword as well as design feature.
What sets this remarkable piece apart are the incredible details of its koshirae (mounting). Look closely for the tsuru (cranes) that adorn the piece – everywhere from the lovely tsuba (guard) to the gorgeous red crisscross scabbard.
Cranes symbolize longevity in Japan are the country’s national bird. The red color brings further luck and prosperity to the owner.
This is a sword that has been widely admired and loved for generations. An inspiring keepsake from Japan that is fully certified. Recommended.

AN OARI SEKI KATANA

Description:

A full-length katana with a groove that extends from tip to tip. A terrific wavy gunome hamon (temper line) blesses this piece, which is rare for long grooved blades.
The hilt is extra long for two hands and the koshirae (mountings) have wonderful stories to them. Look for the kabuto (Samurai helmut) for the menuki (eyelets under the silk hilt). Hyotan (water jugs) also adorn the tsuba.
There is a definitely a connection to Portuguese missionaries here. And what a beautiful shelled lacquer scabbard too!
A polish will make her look even better. Talk to us about this possibility. This sword has been judged NBTHK Hozon (a sword worthy of preserving issued by the Society for the Preservation of Japanese Art Swords). A superb find.

A KOBAYASHI ISE NO KAMI KUNITERU KATANA
A KOBAYASHI ISE NO KAMI KUNITERU KATANA (NBTHK CERTIFICATE)

Description:

This is another impressively long sword in the collection, and signed by Kobayashi Ise no Kami Kuniteru and dated back in February 1676. It’s always great to have a sword both signed AND dated.
The sword is impeccable condition, absolutely smooth as silk, with a straight suguha hamon that is stunning. The body is a combination of mokume (wood grains) and the ever-so-precious nagarehada (swirling waves).
Interestingly enough, just prior to this date, the Tokugawa family made moves to restrict the size of swords to as long 2-shaku 8-sun (or about 80cm). This is basically made just within the legal limit.
This is a sword for the collector who demands the very highest in standards. It is also certified NBTHK TOKUBETUSU HOZON
We recommend investing in your own custom koshirae (mounting) for this sword. Please contact Unique Japan for details.

Description:

This is a worthy restoration project for the adventurer.
This is sword that is more than 500 years-old that is housed in a gorgeous Japanese Naval Officer’s gunto leather scabbard from WWII.
Unfortunately, the blade is a little rusty. This is all too often the case with long lost swords. But the good news it can be rescued.
The black leather scabbard is in very good condition, and it is particularly rare amongst gunto scabbards. Generally speaking only respected, higher ranking officers had swords housed in leather mountings.

A HOUKA KATANA FROM THE NAMBOKUCHO PERIOD (1333-1392)

Location: Bingo (Hiroshima)
Period: Nambokucho Period (1333-1392)
Length: 66.7cm

A HOUKA KATANA FROM THE NAMBOKUCHO PERIOD

Description:

This rare and radiant katana dates back 650 years to a significant time in Japanese history called the Nambokucho period – also known as the Northern and Southern Courts period), spanning from 1336 to 1392.
During this period, there existed a Northern Imperial Court in Kyoto, and a Southern Imperial Court in Nara. Ideologically, the two courts fought bitterly for fifty years, with the South giving up to the North in 1392.
You’ll notice a bo-hi (groove) that extends the full length of the blade. The primary purpose of the groove was to lighten the blade, so as to give it better balance and control for the Samurai.
The hamon is a marvelous suguha (straight) and the body is koitame hada (tight grain) and nagarehada (flowing grain). Tight grained bodies made for stronger swords, thus more effective weapons.
Only finer swords are granted such certification making them much more valuable for the long-term.
Houka is the swordsmith given credit to this piece by the NBTHK. It is unsigned because the nakago (tang) was cut down from its original length (likely 15cm longer or more) thus losing the original engraved name. This is normal, as fighting styles changed in latter years from horseback to cavalry (hand-to-hand combat) which demanded shorter blades.
All in all, this is a sword for the discerning collector. A prized possession that holds a lifetime of memories that shaped Japan’s history.
We recommend investing in your own custom koshirae (mounting) for this sword to bring an extra amount of personalization to the piece.

A VERY SHARP KEIYAKI HILT (JAPANESE ELM) TANTO

Description:

Tantos may not get all the fame that katanas enjoy, but they were just as depended upon by the Samurai (if not more) when lives were at stake. Easily concealed, and purposeful in hand-to-hand combat.
This is a sword from the Mino province (modern day Gifu prefecture). Mino swords were renowned for their sharpness, able to penetrate armor with a skilled thrust. This piece is a very sharp hira-zukuri (flat type) tanto that about 500 years old.
This sword was carefully examined by the NBTHK (Society for the Preservation of Japanese Swords) and it was given a a Hozon certification (worthy of conservation) . This certification increases and helps preserve the value of the sword.
What makes this piece extremely unique is its beautifully finished keiyaki (Japanese elm) wooden handle. Keiyaki wood was used to make some of Japan’s most prestigious furniture, as it has an reputation for elegance and durability.
Another charming point to this tanto is the bold dragonfly on the fuchi (collar) and the matsu (pine) symbol on the bottom side that secures the handle.
The Samurai revered the dragonfly because when they flew, they flew forward and never retreated. It is a symbol of their shared determination and bravery.
Overall this is a splendid collectible.

Description:

Some swords exude a very real spirit of inspiration. This is one such sword.
This gorgeous long katana is blessed with a lovely undulating hamon (temper line) with small cloves nestled into a picture perfect koitame (tight grain) body. A tight grained body is a sign of a well-constructed sword that is admired by connoisseurs.
The tsuba (guard), the fuchi-gashira (collar and pommel), plus the menuki (eyelets under the hilt) are all skillfully crafted works of art that feature a common theme of dragonflies.
The Samurai revered the dragonfly because when they flew, they flew forward and never retreated. Dragonflies are a symbol of determination and bravery, reflecting the very essence of the Samurai themselves.
An original moon-designed habaki (blade collar) that keeps the sword still in the scabbard further distinguishes this collectible piece. This is also a suitable sword for Iaido (the art of drawing the sword) practitioners given its extraordinary balance, shape and length.
This is a fascinating piece that, rightly so, earns respectful attention. Recommended.

Description:

This impressive piece is a Naval Officer’s katana sword from WWII in full mounting.
What makes this sword extra special is for the fact the blade has been recently restored with an exquisite polish that brings out its strikingly beautiful hamon (temper line). A new polish will always benefit the life of the sword.
It is a fact that Japanese Naval Officer swords with WWII mountings are increasingly rare to find, especially when compared to Japanese swords from the Army of the same period. Many swords were lost at sea for example.
The scabbard is in excellent condition, made from sharkskin with a near complete set of clasps making it more valuable as a collectible. Notice the “rising sun” motifs on the tsuba (guard) all match, which is important to look for.
This is a rare find and a superb keepsake from Japan that will be widely admired.

A DRAGON ENGRAVED WAKIZASHI (Edo Period)

Description:

Skillfully engraved with an impressive dragon that adorns the full length of the blade, this Edo period wakizashi is a rare find. The blade shape is classic hira-zukuri (flat make) with a slight curve to it making it extra sharp in design.
The jihada (body) is a combination of itame (plank grain) and mokume (wood grain) and the hamon (temper line) is a superbly suguha (straight).
Complimented with a matching koshirae (mounting), this is a sword that gives off remarkably powerful energy.

Changes in the Shape of a Japanese Sword (1000 years)

Tuesday, July 26th, 2011
In the world of Japanese swords, there are a number of significant time periods to discover. It is quite fascinating to note that just by examining the overal shape and curvature of a particular sword, one can make accurate assumptions as to the age of the sword as shown in the image below.

A Japanese Gourd Hyotan Sake Flask (19th century)

Thursday, July 21st, 2011

This item is now SOLD.

Hyotan Sake Bottle (Meiji Period)

(Scroll down for many more images)

Size: 27.5cm (11″) tall
Code: ujam003
Era: Meiji Period (1868-1912)
Location: Tokyo Office

Description:

Very Japanese in character, this delightful crimson coloured hyotan gourd was shaped while growing to make a convenient tokkuri (sake flask). This is an original piece from the Meiji period (1868-1912).
Note the lovely iron floral ring decoration at the top opening of the bottle to hold the stopper when not in use. This shows that it was owned by a person of wealth and stature, quite possibly from the Samurai class. Most other hyotan do not have such detail. The stopper is attached by a finely braided cord.
When travelling, picnicking informally or just going out on the town, hyotan were worn suspended from the obi sash. Sometimes a cup was attached to the hanging cord, or a separate cup with its own netsuke was provided to make instant service possible. These were also used as water bottles or canteens.
Old hyotan such as this one are valued by Japanese connoisseurs, and large collections of them have been formed. (See “Sake in Japan’s Arts and Crafts” by F. Karel Wiest, Arts of Asia, November/December 1980.)
It remains in excellent condition with no cracking or peeling. A thoughtful gift for a sake or wine lover and a wonderful conversation piece with friends.
