Description:
For those who love the ocean, this sword holds very special significance.
Nami means “wave“, hira means “flat“. This translates to “sail on calm seas“. Naminohira swords made by Satsuma swordsmiths were very popular among the Japanese Imperial Navy for the swords brought with them a positive omen. In general Naminohira blades are very rare, making this is a unique find.
The jihada (body) of this blade is absolutely stunning, and properly reflects the skill of Naminohira smiths. It has a mokume (tight wood grain) appearance that remains in near-mint condition since it was forged over 500 years ago.
This tanto is also adorned with rare and exquisite mountings. The intricately designed tsuba (guard) that is made from namban tetsu (imported steel) brought to Japan from Spanish and Portuguese traders in the 16th century.
Beautiful shisa lions on the menuki protect and guard this sword by repelling evil spirits.
This sword was carefully examined by the Society for the Preservation of Japanese Swords and granted a well deserved NBTHK HOZON certificate – a sword worthy of conservation. This certification increases and helps preserve the value of the sword.
This is a piece that encompasses the spirit of the proud and diligent swordsmiths of the Naminohira tradition.
