A FUJISHIMA TOMOSHIGE TANTO

A Tomoshige Tanto Presentation - Unique Japan

Overview

A first-class Shinshinto period tanto by the Fujishima Tomoshige line of smiths who had ten generations of the name during the Koto period and six generations up until the Shintoshinto period.
The sword has been awarded the prestigious NTHK-NPO Yushuto origami certificate. This is the NTHK-NPO’s equivalent to the NBTHK Juyo certificate. Less than 20 swords are awarded this certificate per year.
A splendid wavy and pointed gunome togariba majiri hamon (temper line) typical of the Fujishima School captures the eye and imagination.
Hailing from the artistic province of Kaga (now Kanazawa), the Fujishima School is considered one that combines characteristics of the five major traditions.
The koshirae (fittings) comprises of a fuchi of shibuichi with the form of Daikoku-sama (Lucky God Yebisu) with his trusted sea bream and fishing rod. Menuki displays the Konjikie kamon (family crest).
An iron tsuba with silver and gold inlay carries the design of sakura (cherry blossoms).
Saya (scabbard) is ishimeji. Kurigata is takabori with the design of an ume (plum) flower.
Kojiri (cap at the end of scabbard) is made out of shibuichi, gold, copper and shakudo with the takabori design of the revered tombo (dragonfly). Kozuka (utility knife) depicts Mt. Fuji with Miho in Matsubara.
Hosaki (small blade) is signed Yonezawa ju Tsunanobu. (Yonezawa is in present-day Fukushima)
This tanto was specially crafted for Mr. Kobayashi Giichi. His name is chiseled on the nakago as per tradition. It was made at the very end of the Edo Period.
This sword was sold to a private collector in the United States.
