A Touch of Gold Two-Toned Clock Authentic Kanazawa-haku gold & bright crimson lacquer
Decidedly modest yet stylish, this two-toned clock will certainly add a dash of chic to the living room. The top half is layered with gold-leaf from Kanazawa while the bottom is made of clear crimson lacquer. The combination of red and gold has always been considered the colours of wealth and class. With its uncluttered design, this mounted piece not only tells the time, but speaks of its owner’s exquisite taste.
What helps to make this timepiece truly special is the gold that decorates the clock. Known as Kanazawa-haku, or “gold leaf from Kanazawa” – the unique process beats gold into remarkably thin paper-like sheets. The final sheets are magnificent creations that are just 1/1000 of a millimeter thick!
Kanazawa, a region that sits on the Sea of Japan, bordered by the Japan Alps, produces 99% of Japan’s high-quality gold leaf. Its traditions span as far back as 800AD. The world-famous Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion Temple) in Kyoto is covered almost entirely in gold-leaf was produced in Kanazawa. The region is also famous for its lacquer ware, (Kanazawa shikki) thus making this a fantastic representation of the quality of work from the region.
