Description:
The scabbard on this sword features an expertly drawn articulated dragon wrapping itself the length of the saya.
Dragons are important legendary creatures in Japanese mythology. They empower the owner and bring with it tremendous fortune.
Interesting to note, one can tell the difference between a Japanese and Chinese dragon by looking at the number of claws they have. Japanese have three while Chinese dragons have four claws (considered an unlucky number in Japan).
This sword is respectfully long at nearly 70cm, and is an excellent representative of katanas produced during the Edo period (1600-1868). The hamon (temper line) is perfectly straight, which is very difficult to achieve from a crafting point of view. This clean temperline gives the piece balance as it does not detract from the artistically skilled scabbard.
All the mountings of this sword are of matching dragons from the Edo period. This sense of cohesive symmetry is widely admired in Japanese culture.
This sword in many ways encompasses the spirit and mystique of Japan and the enduring mark the Edo period had on the country.
