Description:
A full-length katana with a groove that extends from tip to tip. A terrific wavy gunome hamon (temper line) blesses this piece, which is rare for long grooved blades.
The hilt is extra long for two hands and the koshirae (mountings) have wonderful stories to them. Look for the kabuto (Samurai helmut) for the menuki (eyelets under the silk hilt). Hyotan (water jugs) also adorn the tsuba.
There is a definitely a connection to Portuguese missionaries here. And what a beautiful shelled lacquer scabbard too!
A polish will make her look even better. Talk to us about this possibility. This sword has been judged NBTHK Hozon (a sword worthy of preserving issued by the Society for the Preservation of Japanese Art Swords). A superb find.
