A HARIMA NO KUNI TADAKUNI O-WAKIZASHI

A Harima Kuni Fujiwara Tadakuni o-Wakizashi Unique Japan

Overview

Tadakuni was born in Keicho 9 (1604) and studied under his master, father Hirosada, who himself studied under Hizen Munetsugu (as did Shodai Tadayoshi).
Tadakuni first took the name Hironori. He was given title Harima no Daijo in 1634 and changed his name from Hironori to Tadakuni. In 1661 he was awarded the title of Harima no Kami (Lord of Harima province).
Swords produced by Tadakuni display a refined ko-mokumecovered in ji-nie, forming chikei, resulting in konuka-hada.
Tadakuni also studied in the Ichimonji Bizen style under Noriyoshi.
The hamon (temper line) on this long wakizashi (o-wakizashi) is an exquisite example of gunome choji midare. One of the most beautiful temper lines to be seen on a Japanese sword…
From 1673 Tadakuni became a Buddhist priest, known as nyudo and adopted the name Kyutetsu. Died April 22, 1691 (Genroku 4). He was 88 years old.
The sword was awarded prestigious NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon and the highest honors at the NTHK-NPO of Yushuto origami (Very Excellent Sword) in December 2013.
This sword was sold to a private collector in the United States. Currently in shirasaya only, a custom koshirae is in production for the sword.
