A MASATSUNE NIDAI WAKIZASHI

Friday, August 30th, 2013
A Nidai Masatsune Wakizashi from Unique Japan

Overview

From the blade to the fittings, this is a highly collectible wakizashi.
Highly acclaimed Shodai Masatsune (this smith’s sensei) had a son who was to carry on his legacy of sword-making. However, his son died suddenly in 1609. Thus Masatsune nidai (second generation) became his adopted son and stood up to the challenge.
Masatsune Nidai (the smith who crafted this sword) eventually became so highly respected that he was granted the title of Mino no Kami (Lord of Mino province). “Kami”, meaning Lord is the highest distinction a smith can be granted.
Important to note, Masatsune Nidai is ranked as Jo-Saku (a superior swordsmith) in the prestigious Japanese sword reference book NIHON SHINTO JITEN by Fujishiro (a scan of the book is among the photos featured below).
The particular sword has a sublime naka-suguha hamon (straight temper line) akin to a laser beam. It’s jihada (surface skin) is a well-forged ko-itame.
The fittings are exquisite and symbolic to the powerful Daimyo families that ruled Japan. Depictions of the Japanese tsuru (crane) on the menuki (decorative grips), kiku-mon (the chrysanthemum imperial seal of Japan) on the kashira (pommel) are just some of the elements to be enjoyed. (see photos below)
A stunning feature to this sword are the shavings of mother-of-pearl & abalone shell that dance along the polished lacquer scabbard.
Furthermore, the sword carries the serial number of just #31. It is one of the very first swords ever to be registered in Japan in 1951. This sword was held by a family with tremendous significance as only Daimyo families were invited to register their swords in 1951, the first year of registration.
This wakizashi has two NTHK-NPO Kanteisho certificates (Society for the Preservation of the Japanese Sword) – one for the blade and one for the koshirae. Both attest to the authenticity of the signature and quality of the fittings.
This unique sword is NOW SOLD.

A KOYAMA MUNETOSHI KATANA WITH LUCKY DARUMA

Monday, August 19th, 2013
A Koyama Munetoshi Katana with Edo Period Koshirae

Overview (more photos below)

This is a fine katana attributed to swordsmith Koyama Munetoshi, the elder brother of the well-respected Koyama Munetsugu.
The sword has recently been polished to a very beautiful state indeed.

The hamon (temper line) has yakidashi (starts off suguha, straight) then blossoms into an eye-catching koshibiraki choji-midare.

Like Munetsugu (and younger brother Munehira), the Koyama brothers aimed to replicate the beautifully distinctive hamon of the infamous Bizen Ichimonji School in the 13th century.
The beautiful koshirae (sword fittings) are as they were from when the sword was made in the late Edo Period. It is not often a case where collectively the sword and fittings are of equal age. The tsuka (silk wrap) around the hilt has been preserved – a small miracle considering it is about 150 years old!
The tsuba (guard) depicts the great Daruma, or Bodhidharma who is credit to have brought Zen Buddhism to Japan 1500 years ago.
Legend has it that the Daruma spent nine years meditating in a cave, staring at a wall because he was refused entry into a Shaolin temple in China.
This tsuba pay tribute to such dedication with an intense gaze that travels through the tsuba itself!
Daruma is synonymous with “persistence” and the Japanese proverb “Nana Koborbi Yaoki” – Fall down seven times, get up eight.
Now loved in iconic Daruma Dolls, today everyone can enjoy lucky Daruma in their homes to help create personal or business goals. Please visit www.welovedaruma.com to discover the Daruma doll.
This sword has two NTHK-NPO Kanteisho certificates (Society for the Preservation of the Japanese Sword) – one for the blade and one for the koshirae. This sword was sold to an American gentleman.

Client Testimonial

In what may be an odd comparison (except to me since I am a long-time amateur guitarist), I must say that the Koyama Munetoshi katana compares favorably with my treasured Martin D-35 guitar – it’s extremely high quality and functional, yet without any excess or trivial adornments that would detract from its perfect “form is function” presence.
Perhaps that’s why musicians as diverse as Johnny Cash and Dave Matthews were/are fond of the D-35 Dreadnought.
Thanks again very much Pablo. The entire process has been professional and enjoyable. I wish you continued success in your business endeavors. You truly understand customer service, and it’s obvious you know and care about your products.

Former US Army officer.

A MASAIE WAKIZASHI WITH KAMAKIRI (PRAYING MANTIS)

Friday, July 26th, 2013
Masaie-2-45-700

Overview (Photos follow Description)

An eye-catching wakizashi signed by Masaie from the latter stages of the Muromachi Period.
The hamon (temper line) is a striking o-gunome midareba (large wavy semi-circular formation) and a Jizo boshi (a sword tip representing a statue of the priest Jizo).
This hamon is rare for the Mihara school from Bingo province (modern-day Hiroshima) which were traditionally known for their suguha (straight) temper lines.
The beautiful koshirae (sword fittings) carry a unique story…On the kashira (pommel) depicts a kamakiri (praying mantis). On the fuchi (collar) is a bell cricket.
The brave mantis within the insect world is a predator and at the top of the food chain. The role of the mantis is to protect crops from harmful insects, such as the cricket.
And so these fine shakudo-nanako works of art signed by Kuwamura Katsuhisa (circa early 1700s) represent the elite-class of Samurai protecting their farmers in the Edo Period.
Further notes on the fittings include a saya (scabbard) is sprinkled with several layers of crushed mother-of-pearl on its surface and a formidable tsuba (guard) in the Kinai tradition depicting a ginko leaf.
Of particular appeal is a kozuka (utility knife) of a pine and a person carrying an umbrella signed Inoue Izumi no Kami Kunisada.
This sword has two NTHK Kanteisho certificates (Society for the Preservation of the Japanese Sword) – one for the blade and one for the koshirae. This sword was sold to a European gentleman.

A KANEIWA KATANA

Thursday, May 30th, 2013
kanaiewa-thumb

Overview (Photos follow Description)

Kaneiwa was a respected swordsmith in the Mino tradition skilled at creating the eye-catching “Sanbonsugi hamon” temper line. This a temper line that “peaks” on every third wave mimicking the tree line of cedars that grow in the Gifu prefecture.
The great Magoroku Kanemoto first pioneered such a hamon in about 1500AD.
On the tsuba (guard), there is a Samurai holding a spear. This is the infamous and lovable Samurai, “Ohtaka Gengo”, one of the original 47 Ronin. (An 18th century story centered on a band of Samurai who set out to avenge the death of their master.)
Ohtaka Gengo was famous for his skills with the spear. He was also famous for drinking lots of sake!
Hitting the right light on the blade’s surface, one can enjoy a distinct pattern of shirake utsuri (faint whitish spots and reflections in the blade).
A fabulous set of tensho koshirae (mountings reminiscent of the 16th century) featuring a buffalo horn tip on the scabbard and a long tapered silk tsuka handle further compliments the sword.

AN ISHIDO MITSUNOBU (TERUHIDE) WWII NAVY KATANA

Monday, May 20th, 2013
ishido mitsunobu-thumb

Overview (Photos follow Description)

Ishido Teruhide (1900~1982) was the 10th and last generation of the prestigious Ishido Korekazu line of swordsmiths in Edo/Musashi Province (Tokyo). He was the descendant of the infamous Musashi Daijo Fujiwara Korekazu.
During WWII, he produced many swords for high-ranking military officers and also made blades for civilians. Ishido Teruhide was ranked Betseki in the 1943 swordsmith rankings by the Nihon Token Tanrenjo and the Nihon Token Shinbunshi. On this particularly rare sword Teruhide used a kao (carved personal seal) in addition to his mei (signature) with the name Ishido Mitsunobu – a signature he used for part of his career.
As in all Ishido swords the construction is sublime. It is blessed with a fine ko-itame jihada and muji-hada with a subtle suguha hamon mixed with small meandering waves (ko-midare).
Blade is housed in its original WWII Japanese Navy Officer Kai-Gunto Koshirae that includes the traditional brown Navy tassel and the matching serial number 48 on all fittings. It also carries an original gold habaki with a kamon (crest) called Maru ni Mokko that symbolizes prosperity as the design depicts an egg in a nest.

AN IETSUGU KATANA (WITH LUCKY GODS HOTEI AND EBISU)

Monday, April 15th, 2013
iestsugu-thumb

Overview (Photos follow Description)

A very blessed signed katana by Ietsugu from Kaga province (Ishikawa prefecture) circa Eiroku Era (1558~1570) in the late Muromachi period.
Both the sword and koshirae have been granted NBTHK Hozon status proving its guaranteed authenticity.
Uchigatana Edo-period koshirae: saya is black coloured with the design of pine tree leaves and makie (gold lacquer).
Fuchigashira is made from iron with the design of arabesque pattern and a paulownia and takabori and silver inlay.
The menuki (hilt grip ornaments) are made of shakudo with carved silver, copper and gold in the design of the lucky gods Ebisu on one side and the god Hotei on the other!
Ebisu is the infamous Japanese god of fishermen, luck, and workingmen, as well as the guardian of the health of small children. Ebisu is often portrayed holding a rod and a large red sea bream or sea bass. The great Ebisu can be enjoyed on any can or bottle of Japan’s delicious Yebisu beer.
Hotei, the Japanese god of contentment and happiness, guardian of children. He has a cheerful face and a big belly. Widely recognized as the Laughing Buddha. He carries a large cloth bag over his back, one that never empties, for he uses it to feed the poor and needy.
The kozuka (paper knife) also depicts the god Hotei. Extra luck for good measure!
Tsuba is made from iron from the Kinai School. It’s shape is round openwork with gold texture inlay. Signed Echizen Ju Kinai saku.
This sword has been sold to a private collector.

Fourth generation Masahiro comes from a highly respected family of swordsmiths from Hizen province beginning with Masahiro Shodai in the Kanei era (~1624).

A MINO SENJUIN KATANA

Thursday, March 28th, 2013
senjuin-thumb

Overview

Mino Senjuin is one of the major schools of the Mino sword-making tradition. It can be traced back to the Yamato Senjuin School from the late Heian period (12th century).
Experts close to Unique Japan feel that the founder of the Mino Senjuin School itself, KUNINAGA, in the Jowa era (1345~1349) forged this blade. Conservatively speaking, we list the blade during the Oei Period (1394~1427).
The stately Edo-period koshirae (fittings) feature elements of highly skilled gold inlay and a modern hilt wrapped in a complex weave called Kumiage-maki. The tsuba (guard) has details of ivy, which is symbolic for immortality, friendship, faithfulness and eternal life.
Thin stripes of mother-of-pearl gracefully decorate the lacquered saya (scabbard) in a style called Raden Fuemaki. Raden means mother-of-pearl and Fuemaki Nuri is an urushi (lacquer) painting technique.
The background story as to why it is called fue is for its design looks similar to the knot of a bamboo flute or Takebue. Furyu translates to mean refined and elegant.
The sword has a prominent bo-hi (groove) running the length of the blade to lighten and strengthen the blade. It is a sword that exudes a calm magnificence. Such a clean surface and an absolute delight to hold and admire.
This sword was sold to a collector at the Okinawa Sword Show V.

A TOMOTSUGU KATANA

Friday, March 22nd, 2013
tomotsugu-thumb

Overview

This is one of the most impressive katanas that we have had the pleasure to offer our clients.
A two-character signed Tomotsugu blade at a length of 75cm and a wicked 3cm (!) in curvature.
The sword was initially housed only in its protective shirasaya. As we love to do, we built a custom koshirae to the client’s personal specifications. Please browse photos below.
This katana is certified NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon.

A TADAKUNI WAKIZASHI

Friday, March 22nd, 2013
tadakuni-thumb

Overview (Photos follow Description)

Description:

This is an exceptional o-wakizashi (long wakizashi) by one of the finest swordsmiths in Hizen province during the early Edo period, second generation Tadakuni.
The nakago proudly stamped with the kikumon (a chrysanthemum) the emblem of the imperial family – a testament to the quality of work Tadakuni produced. On the opposite side, it reads that the sword was made in part with namban-tetsu, imported steel from Europe, which is rare.
The blade is blessed with a perfectly straight suguha (straight) temper line in a komokume (tight burl grain body pattern) that is characteristic of swords made in the Hizen province. Many scholars suggest the reason for this distinctively clean body was for the fact the steel was a mixture of this imported steel. To this day, Hizen swords are much prized by collectors worldwide.
Fuchigashira is made out of shakudo in the form of a wild goose. Gold menuki work features an unusual collection of horse equipment; a whip and a kutsuwa (a bit) and an abumi (a stirrup).
Tsuba is a mixture of shinchu, gold, shakudo and copper from Nara-school featuring artwork of flying plover birds soaring overlarge waves and traditional Japanese pine trees. An antique saya (scabbard) is protected in black lacquer and polished.

A FUYUHIRO KATANA

Friday, March 22nd, 2013
fuyuhiro-thumb

Overview (Photos follow Description)

Description:

In its original submission to the NTHK, there was no apparent signature on the nakago (tang). It was judged as a sword crafted by Fuyuhiro in the latter part of the Muromachi period.
However, after carefully brushing a section of the nakago, a signature has been revealed! The characters 相州住*** translate to mean a “Soshu Ju..” – a sword crafted in the Soshu tradition (Kamakura). As the sword was slightly shortened from its original tachi length, the characters of the smith have been removed.
This is a sword made much earlier. A conservative estimation would be the Nambokucho Period (1333-1392) that was made famous by the great Masamune.
The hamon is magnificent with rolling waves; carrying with it desired elements such as sunagashi (streaks of sand-like patterns) and hitatsura in the temper line. The koshirae (mounts) are made as a collective set. All clasps are Higo Kinzogan – an intricate craft of Damascening from Higo (Kumamoto prefecture).
The kojiri (tip of scabbard) is of a dragon motif, the menuki is a plum tree, tsuba is bamboo and the saya itself encompasses a tortoise shell design signifying a long and healthy life.
This sword was sold at the Atsugi Base (AOSA) Winter Bazaar 2012.

A MORIMITSU WAKIZASHI

Monday, March 18th, 2013
morimitsu-thumb

Description (Photos follow Description)

Bishu Osafune Shuri no Suke Morimitsu is one of the Oei no San Mitsu (three “Mitsu” smiths of the Oei era 1394~1427) during the early Muromachi period. The other two of the three are his father Moromitsu and his younger brother Yasumitsu. The three smiths together are considered to be the finest swordsmiths active during this period.
Kokan Nagayama author of The Connoisseurs Book of Japanese Swords writes that these three smiths are “very famous and excellent (p 184).” Today many highly rated swords exist from these three masters at the most prestigious levels, including Kokuho (National Treasures).
A most splendid and unique koshirae embraces this wakizashi. The kokutan (ebony) handle is accented with konjiki gold deities Orihime and Hikoboshi (represented by the stars Vega and Altair respectively). According to legend, the Milky Way separates these lovers, allowed to meet only once a year on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month of the luni-solar calendar.
The kawari-saya (scabbard) is uguisu lacquered (olive-green) with gold and black in the likeness of falling rain. Han-tachi (half tachi) elements made of shibuichi alloy contain the fearless tombo (dragonfly), butterfly and ladybird. Notice how the silver habaki is in the form of Mount Fuji.
Sword was one of the very first registered in the prestigious Daimyo year of 1951 (Showa 26). It’s registration number is just 443.

A SUKEMUNE WAKIZASHI

Tuesday, January 15th, 2013
UJWA056 - A SUKEMUNE WAKIZASHI (UNIQUE JAPAN)

Overview (Photos follow Description)

Description:

Sukemune was a highly regarded swordsmith from the Shimada School in the Soshu tradition that Masamune perfected in the 13th century in Kamakura.
He had a reputation for producing long tantos blessed with a thick kasane (spine) and fabulous jihada (body grain) comprising of itame and mokume (wood swirl patterns).
Katsuyori Takeda, son of Shingen Takeda (a preeminent Daimyo with exceptional military prestige) adored swords made by second generation Sukemune. Katsuyori lived between 1546 and 1582, so he may have very well owned this sword.
Edo period Shisa lions set on the tsuka (hilt) feature prominently on the oversized ray skin nodes. Shisa lions are a traditional Ryukyuan decoration, often in pairs, resembling a cross between a lion and a dog from Okinawan mythology.
Shisa lions are wards, believed to bring protection from evil spirits. The left shisa traditionally has a closed mouth, the right one an open mouth. This is a keeper.

A BIZEN TAKAMITSU WAKIZASHI

Monday, January 14th, 2013
UJWA058 - A TAKAMITSU WAKIZASHI (UNIQUE JAPAN)

Overview (Photos follow Description)

Description:

500 years ago, during the Late Muromachi period saw the rise of Katate-uchi, swords such as this one, meant for one-handed use on the battle field featuring a heavy curvature.
Brutal fighting existed in the Sengoku Jidai at the end of the 16th century that culminated in the dawn of the Edo Period in around 1600.
Although this sword is technically registered as a wakizashi, this was most definitely a katana, originally crafted at a length of approximately 62cm.
Takamitsu was a respected swordsmith holding rank with the likes of Sukesada who also excelled in this type of katana. The gorgeous hamon (temper line) that features crab claws is typical of the artistry that defined Bizen sword making.
The Handachi Koshirae (half-tachi mounting) is from Edo period and the length reflects that of a katana too.
Elements of the exquisite mounting include plant and flower designed clasps (for long health) mixed with a dragon menuki (ornament under the silk hilt) and a chrysanthemum-designed tsuba (guard).

A NANKI SHIGEKUNI WAKIZASHI

Friday, January 11th, 2013
UJWA063 - A NANKI SHIGEKUNI WAKIZASHI (UNIQUE JAPAN)

Overview (Photos follow Description)

Description:

Shigekuni was Sai-josaku (grandmaster), one of the finest swordsmiths of Shinto period (1596~1751). His skill was regularly compared with the likes of Horikawa Kunihiro among all the Keicho Shinto smiths. His strength lay in his production of clear and bright jihada (body) and a ha (cutting edge) that was second to none among his contemporaries.
Shigekuni belonged to the Monju-ha of the Yamato Tegai School and served Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu as one of his personal sword makers. After Ieyasu passed away in 1616, Shigekuni followed Ieyasu’s tenth son, Yorinobu to Wakayama in Kishu where Yorinobu founded the Kishu Tokugawa family that became one of the three main Tokugawa families.
This formidable wakizashi holds all the hallmarks of Shigekuni, including a clean masame (straight grain) steel structure and extended kissaki (tip). The koshirae (fittings) consist of a koi (golden carp) cascading up a waterfall, reaching enlightenment upon the successful climb.
Menuki is made out of shakudo designed as an extended pine tree. The tsukamaki (hilt wrap) is a very rare type called Jyabara-maki (string wrap) with rayskin and an o-tsubu (a large node). The maru-tsuba (round guard) is made from shakudo and encompasses a Christian cross, which is also remarkably rare. This is a highly collectible piece of Japanese history.

A HIROSHIGE KATANA

Saturday, December 15th, 2012
UJKA039 - A HIROSHIGE KATANA (UNIQUE JAPAN)

Overview (Photos follow Description)

Description:

Behold a classic Kanbun Shinto katana in the early Edo period, where the blade gradually tapers to a point. With a blade length of more than 70cm, signed and in its original condition makes this sword very collectible.
The fine Edo-period elements of the koshirae, features a fuchigashira (collar and pommel) signed by 埋忠重義 (Umetada Shigeyoshi). The bow and arrow are set in gold and silver on an iron base.
Umetada Shigeyoshi of the Umetada school in Musashi (modern-day Tokyo and Saitama) was a skillful sword-fitting maker and held in high esteem. Swordsmith Hiroshige, also from Musashi, makes this sword and mounting a fine partnership.
The menuki (ornamental grips under the silk handle) are of dragons bringing power and good fortune to the sword.
The tsuba (guard) features waves and the moon. The symbolism of these elements says that once you are on waves, you will receive good luck.

A MORIIE KODACHI (Oei era 1394~1428)

Wednesday, November 7th, 2012

Description:

This splendid kodachi was forged by swordsmith Moriie during the Oei Era, circa 1394~1428 in the early Muromachi Period. It has been certified by the NBTHK (Society for the Preservation of the Japan Art Sword), as Tokubetsu Kicho (Especially Precious).
The sword’s shape and size is referred to as a small tachi, or kodachi. It has a lovely bizen koshi-zori curvature and a ko-kissaki (a small tip).
It is a pioneering example of a sword-making evolution that saw longer tachi swords carried on horseback by the Samurai in the Kamakura and Nambokucho periods (12th to 14th centuries) being replaced by the katana, and then the infamous uchigatana (one-handed swords of the 16th century).
The fundamental difference between the longer tachi swords and katana is as follows: The tachi is slung from the body blade down, the katana, however, is carried blade up. The tachi requires two actions, the draw and then cut. The katana can perform both actions at once; making is faster and more effective in hand-to-hand combat situations.

The first katanas in the early Muromachi period were generally about 70cm to 73cm in length. The “uchigatana” or deeply curved one-handed sword of about 60cm is considered to have started in the Eikyo Era (1429~1441) and reached its final design in the early 16th century when infantry battles engulfed the nation during the Sengoku Jidai (Period of Warring States).

Yet this katana, at 61.8cm pre-dates the Eikyo Era, making it a bona fide trendsetter.
Moriie (pronounced moh-ree-yeh) hails from a distinguished line of swordsmiths – he is in fact the 5th generation to carry the name. In 1259, first generation Moriie founded the Hatakeda school in Bizen province. Moriie originally belonged to the prestigious Fukuoka Ichimonji group in the mid-Kamakura period.
The school was named after the village of Hatakeda. Later generations of the school moved from Hatakeda to Osafune village. Therefore swords such as this one bare the inscription ‘Osafune Ju’ or ‘Bishu Osafune’ meaning “resident of Osafune”.
Bizen province (Okayama prefecture) is regarded as Japan’s ‘Sword Kingdom’ as nearly half of extant swords today, both in quantity and quality were produced in Bizen.
On the opposite side to the signature on the nakago, the sword is dated “10th day of the 8th month”. This date holds significant meaning in Japan according to the Shitenno Temple in Osaka. Since ancient times, if one prays on August 9th or 10th, the Goddess Kannon (Deity of Mercy) will grant the equivalent of 1,000 days of blessings upon thee.
Of particular interest, Dr. Kanzan Sato, founding member of the NBTHK signed the sword’s protective magnolia scabbard (shirasaya) in the spring of 1978 citing his opinion that this particular work of Moriie was “Yushu” meaning ”excellent”.
Renowned experts of Japanese sword such as NBTHK’s Tanzan, Kunzan and Dr. Kanzan would provide signed attributions directly on the shirasaya (known as ’sayagaki’). These opinions are highly regarded and prized by collectors worldwide.
The koshirae (mounting) for the sword is delightful. The twinkling saya (scabbard) gets its brilliance from the sprinkling of several dustings of crushed mother-of-pearl – a technique that involves the skillful application of repeated layers of Japanese urushi (lacquer) over many weeks.
This saya was made during the Meiji period (1868-1912). In fact, the saya itself is dated at the mouth of the piece, which is very unusual.

On the saya, there is a featured kamon (family crest) that looks similar to a three-leaf clover. This kamon was held by Morikawa Echizen no Kami. He was esteemed court judge called “Go-Bugyō” (or Five Commissioners) in Yamashiro province, currently modern-day Kyoto.
The Go-Bugyō was an administrative organ of feudal Japan that later evolved into the Go-Tairō (Council of Five Elders). Toyotomi Hideyoshi established it when he became kampaku (Imperial regent) in 1585. The Commissioners were in charge of governing the capital city of Kyoto and the surrounding areas.
The tsuba (guard) is made of Kaga Zougan (damascening). This is a unique Japanese art form of inlaying gold into darkly oxidized steel backgrounds to produce intricate geometric patterns. It was perfected in Kaga province (Kanazawa), an area renowned for kinpaku (gold leaf).
In fact, this sword was made during the time the infamous Kinkakuji temple (Golden Pavilion) was built in Kyoto (1397). This Zen Buddhist building features an exterior covered with kinpaku gold leaf from Kaga that is about 1/10,000 of a millimeter thick!

Upon close inspection of the tsuba, the kamon of the honourable Nitta Yoshisada can be seen. Yoshisada, head of the Nitta family in the early 14th century, supported the Southern Court of Emperor Go-Daigo in the Nanbokuchō period, played an instrumental role in capturing Kamakura from the Hōjō clan in 1333.

The hilt of the sword contains two sets of menuki (ornamental grips under the silk-wrapped cord) that features the distinguished kamon of the Toyotomi clan. The late great Toyotomi Hideyoshi was a daimyo, warrior, general and politician of the Sengoku Jidai (warring states period).
Toyotomi Hideyoshi succeeded his former liege lord, Oda Nobunaga, and brought an end to the Sengoku Jidai (late Muromachi period) by unifying the political factions of Japan.

A BIZEN SUKEMITSU WAKIZASHI

Monday, August 27th, 2012

Description:

This is a beautiful 500-year old wakizashi that was crafted by Sukemitsu in Bizen province, the Kingdom of Japanese swords, present-day Okayama prefecture.
The swordsmith’s full name is Sukemitsu Yosazaemon and is the son of Gorozaemonnojo. Fujishiro ranked Sukemitsu as Jo-Saku (a superior swordsmith of his generation).
The sword has been shortened slightly (suriage) from its original length of about 60cm. Thankfully his two character signature is still visible on the nakago (tang).
The gorgeous Edo-period koshirae (mountings) symbolize the beauty and power of nature. It has a lovely kozuka (Samurai paper knife) nestled in the mounting.
The sword’s jihada (steel body) is blessed with what is called “Botan Utsuri”, a unique second shadow temper line that resembles the peony flower (botan is the Japanese word for peony). And that is why all the fittings of the sword feature peonies.
The Japanese peony, is considered the “King of Flowers”, symbolizing wealth, good fortune, honor, daring and bravery.
Status: SOLD
