Description:

Behold a sword with great character. It is attributed to Fujiwara Takada, a very respected swordsmith of his generation.
This is typical representation of Shinto era swords at the commencement of the Edo period (around 1630AD). Steel manufacturing and transport links became more efficient within the country, and the weight of this piece a testament to such cultural advancements.
On the mounting there is a unique reference to a royal family scene in which they are in battle with the Samurai. It is likely the depiction of the classic battles of the Taira and Minamoto clans in the Kyoto area in the late 12th century.
The menuki under the silk handle (tsuka) are of Shisa lions, which bring the owner good luck and can ward off evil spirits in the home. Look for the man and woman on the kashira (pommel) holding a giant naginata (pole sword). The red lacquered saya (scabbard) is decorated by the sprinkling of tiny pieces of sea shells.
It’s this impressive attention to detail that sets Japan apart from the rest of the world.
A marvelous keepsake from an iconic time in Japan.
